June is here, summer is upon us and Certified Organic Cherries have just been harvested and are off to our drying facility! To us, this is a time to appreciate that these sweet yet fickle little fruits have made it through a long, cool and rainy winter and spring! It’s also a time to appreciate that we have a nice amount of these upcycled fruits to package up and offer you this season. Up-what, you may ask?! That’s upcycled.
Lately, we’ve been talking about upcycling. While it’s a hot topic right now thanks to clever marketing campaigns, it’s a practice that’s been around since the dawn of fruit drying. At Bella Viva Orchards, we’ve been upcycling for over three decades! Marketing campaigns aside, we’re really happy that this practice is now getting the attention and appreciation it deserves.
For those of you who are just getting on board with understanding upcycling, in a nutshell, it’s the practice of turning misshapen fruit into perfectly edible beauty. Fresh organic cherries are grown to be sold at markets like your local supermarket, however any less than perfect looking cherries are sorted out and not sent to market. This is where upcycling shines: Perfectly nutritious fruit is rescued from the waste bin, the results are beautiful, natural, Certified Organic dried fruit that you’d never know was aesthetically challenged at one time. Reminds me of the ugly duckling that turned into the beautiful swan.
We are passionate about reducing food waste by upcycling, it’s a mission that’s very dear to our hearts.
