You know how fond we are of our Certified Organic California Apricots. They hold a special place in our hearts and if you’ve eaten them we’re sure you are crazy about them, too!

For those of you who’ve been reading our newsletters for a while you know the story: These beautiful sun-kissed fruits are grown in an estate orchard that’s been in our family since 1943. This orchard, on the same property where they Martino kids grew up, is just a few minutes down the country roads from our drying yard, so beyond them being grown organically and without any additives whatsoever, you can feel extra good knowing that their carbon footprint is minimal. Because they’re admirably organic, these fruits have a pleasant deep, slightly dark color and offer a mouth full of sweet, tangy flavor. Part of that texture and flavor comes from generations of our family constantly striving for the best way to perfect the Apricot experience for our friends and family.

That, of course, includes YOU! Just part of what we do to grow an amazing Apricot is what’s known as thinning. The reason we’re talking about it right now is that in a few weeks, specially-trained workers will be out in our orchards manually removing between 50 and 80 percent of the young fruits, otherwise known as fruitlets. No machines and no chemicals. Just expertise, care and total passion for what’s going to come of our efforts. It may make some people kind of gasp to think of that much fruit being removed from the trees, but what happens as a result is those fruits that do remain on the trees get to bathe in the warm California sun, where they can develop their optimal size and sweetness. We say it’s a sacrifice of sorts with an enormously rewarding outcome!
