Harvesting Persimmons

There are basically two different types of persimmons. One type of persimmon is similarly shaped to an apple. It is great to pick right off the tree and enjoy its sweet flavor while it is still crisp, such as the Fuyu persimmon. Below you can see Fuyu persimmons on the tree, ready to be picked. The other persimmon is shaped like a heart and is bitter while crisp, such as the Hachiya.
The Hachiya persimmons that can be bitter are incredibly sweet when allowed to soften and also when they are used for cooking and drying. When dried, either of these persimmons can last all year and give you the sweet taste of a ripe Fuyu. Our Dried Persimmons look great and are dried naturally without any preservatives of any kind.
The Persimmon was introduced to the United States in 1851 when Admiral Perry discovered the fruit growing on the coast of Southern Japan. They were brought back to the East coast where many seeds were planted in the DC area. Click Here to learn more about the history of Persimmons.
After persimmons are harvested, they are sliced and placed on a tray to dry.
Here are freshly cut Fuyu Persimmons sitting flat on a tray that will be brought to the dehydrator where they will be naturally dried without preservatives.

Dried Persimmons

Dried persimmons are such a delicious snack. Our dried persimmons are chewy and have a light sweet taste. They are dried naturally, without any preservatives at all.

According to Martha Stewart, Bella Viva Persimmons are even more delicious than the native grown dried persimmons of Japan.
