Fall Fruits

Many people who grew up in the city have no idea what it is like to grow up on the farm. Here Belle Martino picks fresh sustainably grown Fuyu persimmons to take to the Alemany farmer's market in San Francisco. Not only does she hand pick much of the fruit for these farmer's markets but she loads it on a full size flat bed truck and personally drives it from the valley to the bay.

The persimmon is a fabulous fruit. There are basically two different types of persimmons. One type of persimmon is similarly shaped to an apple. It is great to pick right off the tree and enjoy its sweet flavor while it is still crisp, such as the Fuyu persimmon. The other persimmon is shaped like a heart and is bitter while crisp, such as the Hachiya. However, these Hachiya persimmons that seem bitter are incredibly sweet when allowed to soften and also when they are used for cooking and drying. When dried they can last all year and give you the sweet taste of a ripe Fuyu.
